“I bring my community in my body, and I make my community where I live. And that question is very much aligned with, do I feel as if I’m an American? Because you build community, and I could put the word, insert the word home where that community is. So, Edwidge Danticat, our wonderful writer from Haiti says, “Your definition of home changes when you start burying your family.” I told her today, today is my mom’s anniversary, June 10th. She died 2010, and she’s buried here. She lived with us in Morningside. Without her, I don’t think I would’ve been able to function in the multiple layers that America wants you to function in. You have to be a wife, you have to be a mother, you have to be a driver, you have to be a earner, you have to be a creator. All of these things that you have to function here in order to survive. So, I say this to you that, I’m an American citizen. America is my home. My heart lives in the Caribbean”
